How to check if a neighborhood is safe#

  • Search the address. The search above shows registered sex offenders around a home, a school or a route. Each state page links to the official registry, the record of authority.
  • Read the police reports for the blocks.Where Warden has the city's open data, the city crime maps show what was reported in the last 30 days, by type and by block.
  • Compare the neighborhood with the rest of the city. The neighborhood rankings below put violent crime reports per square mile side by side, so a busy downtown and a quiet residential area are not judged on raw totals.
  • Go and look, at different times.Visit on a weekday evening and a weekend night, talk to neighbors, and ask the local police department's non-emergency line about recurring problems.
  • Search nationwide when you move. The U.S. Department of Justice runs a national registry search at NSOPW.gov.

What this can and cannot tell you#

Registries list people convicted of registrable offenses where they report living, working or studying; they are not a list of every risk. Police open data covers what a department publishes, usually preliminary reports located to the block, not every incident and not convictions. Use both as a starting point, never to harass anyone or to screen tenants, employees or dates.

Questions#

How can I tell if my neighborhood is safe?

▾

Combine three things: who is on the sex offender registry around the address, what police reported on the surrounding blocks recently, and how the neighborhood compares with the rest of the city. Warden puts the first on one map for any US address, and the other two side by side in 43 cities.

Can I see crime on my street?

▾

In the cities with a crime map, yes: reports are shown at block level with their type and date, and the Warden app maps every published report around the addresses you save.

Is it free?

▾

Searching an address, the counts, the crime maps and the neighborhood rankings are free. Names, photos and full registry records are part of Warden Premium.

Where does the data come from?

▾

From the public sex offender registries of every state and DC, and from city police departments' open-data portals. Every agency is listed on the data sources page.

Use this information responsibly

Registry information is published so people can protect themselves and their families. Using it to threaten, harass or discriminate against anyone, including a registrant or their family, is illegal and can lead to criminal charges and civil liability.

Warden is not a consumer reporting agency. Do not use these pages or the map to decide on housing, employment, credit, insurance or any other eligibility. Records can be incomplete or out of date, and a matching name or address does not prove identity: always confirm with the official state registry. See our Terms of Use.
